Happy Valentine’s Day! I love you. I miss you. You are my friend. Be mine. Sweets. These English words for this American holiday are ubiquitous. Taught in every classroom to children across America annually. What this means is that by the time most Americans graduate from high school they have been exposed to these words for 15 years of their life. Every American knows what to say and what to do on Valentine’s Day in English.
So what do we know from this experience? Part of learning a language is the behaviors, traditions and sayings we associate with our lived experiences. Valentine’s Day comes once a year. And every year, we know it’s about red and the love we give to people.
